Welcome back, Investigators!

July is in full swing, and we’re thrilled to return with our mid‑month reveal—a festive celebration of Case File No. 481 and the brilliant work of our design team. This challenge captures the heart of Independence Day with its bold palette, patriotic motifs, and joyful summer spirit. As fireworks fade and the season settles into its sun‑soaked rhythm, our community continues to shine with creativity, storytelling, and inspired interpretations of the clues.

Today, we’re excited to share how our talented team cracked this Case File, each layout bursting with color, movement, and the magic of midsummer memories.

And don’t forget—if life has kept you busy and you haven’t had a chance to tackle our first July challenge yet, there’s still plenty of time. Both July Case Files remain open through August 4, giving you room to gather your evidence, follow the clues, and craft your layouts at your own pace.

GUEST DETECTIVE SPOTS

Our Detective Squad is always hot on the trail of standout scrappers! If your layout leaves us awestruck, you just might get deputized as a Guest Detective. We’ll be combing through the case files on the 4th of each month, so make sure your evidence—er, layout—is filed in the album by then. And don’t worry—our cold cases are always open, so feel free to revisit old clues whenever inspiration strikes. Crack enough crafty cases and leave a trail of wow-worthy work… and you could find yourself recruited to our elite Design Team Task Force!

This Month's Guest Designers

We’re delighted to welcome our guest designers back to CSI! Each brings a unique perspective and artistic flair. Their layouts will appear alongside the Detectives' work in the Inspiration section of this post.

Jennifer Walth

Jennifer lives near Milwaukee, WI with her husband of 17 years and her two children, a 14 yo daughter and an 11 yo son. They are the stars of her scrapbooking, and their athleticism keeps her busy. Cheering for volleyball and baseball is a second full time job! For her first full-time job, Jennifer manages a marketing team, controlling branding and messaging for three brands in the snow and ice equipment industry. She’s back to scrapbooking now that she completed her MBA last May.

Sofi Söderlund

Hi! I’m so happy to be a guest designer this month, joining in from the north of Sweden. In truth, I don’t create with paper so often anymore. For a long period I crafted every single day, but somewhere around summer 2019 my scrapbooking turned to knitting. And now I knit every day instead. But this spring, I started to feel the urge for some scrapbooking again. I always need something to help get my imagination going, and of course I remembered CSI as one of my favourite challenge websites back in the day, so that’s where I headed searching for inspiration. I love how they give us so many ideas for inspiration, and we can choose to use all of them or just one. I mostly do single-page layouts with pictures of my four kids. I love a white background with watercoloring and then a bunch of yummy layers. Thank you for having me join in the fun!

Hi, crafty friends! My name is Nelya, I’m originally from Ukraine. I’m a mommy of 4; I mostly got into it after having our first baby. My style has definitely evolved since then! I love to glean inspiration from other crafters; I think that’s how I was able to grow so much. I like to start a layout in different ways. Sometimes photos, sometimes a product that I want to use or use up, sometimes a sketch or challenge… I love to join in challenges! I’ve also focused more of my attention on journaling and story telling rather than a photo itself. Everyday moments are my favorite to document. I love to hear stories from my childhood, and want to make sure my kiddos have that too.

I scrap in a variety of sizes: 12x12, 8.5x11, 6x8, and TN - as well as an occasional pocket page in any of those sizes! Last year I achieved some crafty goals like being featured in a magazine and being on a Design Team, and recently I was on the Scrapbook Your Way podcast! This taught me that having dreams/ setting goals is worthwhile. This month, we’re celebrating National Watermelon Month and the spirited joy of Independence Day, inviting you to explore stories of sweetness, celebration, gathering, and the colorful moments that shape our midsummer memories.

Case File No. 480 – National Watermelon Month

There’s nothing quite like the refreshing magic of watermelon—the juicy slices, the cheerful pinks and greens, the carefree feeling of summer days spent outdoors. This Scene is full of playful, sun‑kissed charm: picnic blankets, seeds and stripes, breezy afternoons, and the simple delight of sharing something sweet.

The palette mixes lively pinks, greens, reds, and soft neutrals, echoing the colors of ripe fruit, grassy lawns, and warm July light. Whether you’re inspired by the watermelon motifs, the sense of summer fun, or the idea of savoring what nourishes joy, this Case File invites you to tell stories of sweetness, connection, and the bright heart of the season.

Case File No. 481 – Independence Day

If Case File 480 celebrates the flavors of summer, Case File 481 captures its festive spirit. This Scene is all about celebration—stars, stripes, gatherings, and the energy of July’s patriotic traditions. Fireworks, flags, and midsummer evenings set the tone for stories filled with pride, community, and togetherness.

The palette blends bold red, crisp white, deep blue, and—new this year—a pop of sunshine yellow that adds warmth and brightness to the investigation. Whether you’re documenting a Fourth of July tradition, a moment of unity, or the feeling of summer celebration, this Case File encourages you to explore stories of joy, freedom, and the spark of midsummer magic.

And remember—you’re never limited to the theme itself. Let the Scenes spark your imagination, or follow the traditional clues at the bottom of this post to guide your investigation. However you interpret the evidence, we can’t wait to see how you solve the Case!

Think cheerful rosettes, crisp patterns, flags fluttering in the summer breeze, and the shared joy of gathering with the people who make your stories shine.

The palette radiates midsummer energy—deep cool blue, bright red, powder blue, crisp white, and a touch of sunglow yellow that adds warmth and cheer. These hues capture everything from patriotic pride to sun‑drenched afternoons, inviting you to explore themes of celebration, unity, tradition, and the simple magic of summer memories.

You’ll find a full set of traditional clues at the bottom of the reveal, but you’re also welcome to draw inspiration straight from the Scene. GUEST DETECTIVES

Our Guest Detectives have stepped into the festive spirit of July with us this month, each bringing their own creative flair to Case File No. 481. Their layouts shine with bold color, heartfelt storytelling, and beautifully personal interpretations of the Independence Day Scene. From stars and stripes to sun‑soaked summer memories, their work captures the joy, unity, and celebration at the heart of this Case File.

Let’s take a closer look at how each Guest Detective approached the investigation. Their layouts offer fresh perspectives on the Case File—blending creativity, narrative, and a burst of patriotic charm that’s sure to inspire your next investigation.

Jennifer Walth

I loved the patriotic theme for this reveal! The US cutout and the blue star paper scraps became the basis for this page that shows my kids when they were little with their Great Grandma on the Fourth of July. The stars and banners of the inspiration really stood out and became a central element to my layout. I worked in the gold with sequins, embossing powder, and the title. Making the flowers allowed me to get the right colors and continue the patriotic theme.

I started out using just the color combo (the large star) but then had some stickers call my name so I allowed it . I was inspired by the stars, and I also have puffy stickers.

This month’s Scene is all about celebration—stars, stripes, sunshine, and the joyful spirit of Independence Day. Let the colors and imagery guide you, or follow one of these creative prompts to get your layout flowing:

  • Focus on shape — Incorporate stars, rosettes, or banner shapes to mimic the decorations in the inspiration image. Layer them in dynamic arrangements or use stitching to create movement and rhythm across your page.

  • Tell a summer story — Document a favorite July tradition—parades, fireworks, barbecues, pool days, or any moment that feels like pure midsummer celebration.
