July Scrapbooking Challenge Case Files - First Reveal | Deadline: August 4, 2026

Welcome to July at CSI, Investigators!

We’re diving into summer with two vibrant new Case Files that celebrate the season’s sweetest stories. July brings a double dose of inspiration—National Watermelon Month and Independence Day—each bursting with color, warmth, and creative possibilities. Whether your photos capture juicy slices of summer fun or patriotic gatherings under the fireworks, we can’t wait to see how you interpret these festive clues.

Our first Case File, No. 480, is all about the refreshing joy of watermelon—bright hues, playful patterns, and the essence of summer sweetness. Our second Case File, No. 481, bursts with patriotic flair—stars, stripes, and all the festive energy of Independence Day. The clues invite you to capture the spirit of freedom and summer celebration in bold red, white, and blue. And this year, there’s a twist of brightness: a pop of sunshine yellow adds warmth and cheer to the palette, echoing the joy and unity of midsummer gatherings.

Both July Case Files will remain open through August 4, giving you plenty of time to soak up the inspiration, gather your evidence, and craft your creative layouts.

GUEST DETECTIVE SPOTS

Our Detective Squad is always hot on the trail of standout scrappers! If your layout leaves us awestruck, you just might get deputized as a Guest Detective. We’ll be combing through the case files on the 4th of each month, so make sure your evidence—er, layout—is filed in the album by then. And don’t worry—our cold cases are always open, so feel free to revisit old clues whenever inspiration strikes. Crack enough crafty cases and leave a trail of wow-worthy work… and you could find yourself recruited to our elite Design Team Task Force!

This Month's Guest Designers

We’re delighted to welcome our guest designers back to CSI! Each brings a unique perspective and artistic flair. Their layouts will appear alongside the Detectives' work in the Inspiration section of this post.

Jennifer Walth

Jennifer lives near Milwaukee, WI with her husband of 17 years and her two children, a 14 yo daughter and an 11 yo son. They are the stars of her scrapbooking, and their athleticism keeps her busy. Cheering for volleyball and baseball is a second full time job! For her first full-time job, Jennifer manages a marketing team, controlling branding and messaging for three brands in the snow and ice equipment industry. She’s back to scrapbooking now that she completed her MBA last May.

Sofi Söderlund

Hi! I’m so happy to be a guest designer this month, joining in from the north of Sweden. In truth, I don’t create with paper so often anymore. For a long period I crafted every single day, but somewhere around summer 2019 my scrapbooking turned to knitting. And now I knit every day instead. But this spring, I started to feel the urge for some scrapbooking again. I always need something to help get my imagination going, and of course I remembered CSI as one of my favourite challenge websites back in the day, so that’s where I headed searching for inspiration. I love how they give us so many ideas for inspiration, and we can choose to use all of them or just one. I mostly do single-page layouts with pictures of my four kids. I love a white background with watercoloring and then a bunch of yummy layers. Thank you for having me join in the fun!

CASE FILES

At CSI, we love giving our Case Files a playful twist, and July’s investigations are bursting with bright, summery inspiration. This month, we’re celebrating National Watermelon Month and the spirited joy of Independence Day, inviting you to explore stories of sweetness, celebration, gathering, and the colorful moments that shape our midsummer memories.

Case File No. 480 – National Watermelon Month

There’s nothing quite like the refreshing magic of watermelon—the juicy slices, the cheerful pinks and greens, the carefree feeling of summer days spent outdoors. This Scene is full of playful, sun‑kissed charm: picnic blankets, seeds and stripes, breezy afternoons, and the simple delight of sharing something sweet.

The palette mixes lively pinks, greens, reds, and soft neutrals, echoing the colors of ripe fruit, grassy lawns, and warm July light. Whether you’re inspired by the watermelon motifs, the sense of summer fun, or the idea of savoring what nourishes joy, this Case File invites you to tell stories of sweetness, connection, and the bright heart of the season.

Case File No. 481 – Independence Day

If Case File 480 celebrates the flavors of summer, Case File 481 captures its festive spirit. This Scene is all about celebration—stars, stripes, gatherings, and the energy of July’s patriotic traditions. Fireworks, flags, and midsummer evenings set the tone for stories filled with pride, community, and togetherness.

The palette blends bold red, crisp white, deep blue, and—new this year—a pop of sunshine yellow that adds warmth and brightness to the investigation. Whether you’re documenting a Fourth of July tradition, a moment of unity, or the feeling of summer celebration, this Case File encourages you to explore stories of joy, freedom, and the spark of midsummer magic.

And remember—you’re never limited to the theme itself. Let the Scenes spark your imagination, or follow the traditional clues at the bottom of this post to guide your investigation. However you interpret the evidence, we can’t wait to see how you solve the Case!

This Month's Guest Designers

We’re delighted to welcome our guest designers back to CSI! Each brings a unique perspective and artistic flair. Their layouts will appear alongside the Detectives' work in the Inspiration section of this post.

Hi! My name is Heather Bellanger and I’m excited to be a Guest Designer for June. Lately I’ve been making memories faster than I can scrapbook them (very fun problem to have)! So I jumped at the chance to get back to creating. I’ve scrapbooked since the day in 2000 when my husband suggested that I find a hobby - and my love for scrapbooking was born!

Mostly I do single page layouts with my favorite photo (or 3) from a fun day. My style can be described as “more is more”, but I’m always finding “one more thing to add”. Thank you to Debbi for inviting me and I hope find inspiration from my layouts. Cheers!

I’m so excited to be guest designing this month! I’ve been scrapbooking for over 33 years, before there were stores and manufacturers dedicated to scrapbooking. I used stickers and mylar balloon letters for my titles. I’m an electrical engineer by day, so I need a crafty outlet to balance out all the numbers in my head. I’ve been married to my best friend for over 17 years and he completely supports my scrapbook obsession. We have a 14 year old daughter, whom I am committed to being the most photographed child in the world! I’m pretty sure that goal is currently being achieved. I scrapbook many different methods from simple kits, to mixed media, to tons of layers. It just depends on what inspires me that day. I probably have an entire store worth of supplies in my scrap room, and I enjoy organizing almost as much as scrapping. Finally, I love to lift layouts, use sketches, and simply be inspired, so this guest designer spot for CSI was perfect!

I live on the Central Coast of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, about 1.5 hours north of Sydney.

Since childhood I have been using wool, embroidery threads, fabric and paper to create.

After a long career in finance, I began teaching patchwork, embroidery and paper crafts.  I loved to see people who thought “I cannot do that” achieve and succeed.

These days I enjoy scrapbooking, mixed media and junk journalling. I recently attended a mixed media retreat in Gundagai, NSW called Down the Rabbit Hole - Alice in Wonderland so much fun and laughter.  I also enjoy cruising especially if there is scrapbooking involved.

Thank you for the opportunity to be a Guest Detective this month.

CASE FILES

At CSI, we love giving our Case Files a playful twist, and this month’s investigations are simmering with inspiration. June’s challenges celebrate Country Cooking Month and the easy warmth of early summer, inviting you to explore stories of comfort, gathering, sunshine, and the simple pleasures that shape our everyday lives.

Case File No. 478 – Country Cooking Month

There’s a special kind of magic in a well‑loved kitchen—the clatter of jars, the glow of woodgrain, the quiet rituals that nourish both body and memory. This Scene is steeped in cozy, homespun charm: baskets, pitchers, gingham, and the soft hum of daily life unfolding around the table.

The palette mixes reds, creams, olives, and warm browns, echoing the textures of rustic kitchens and treasured recipes passed down through generations. Whether you’re inspired by the cooking motifs, the sense of home, or the idea of tending to what feeds you—literally or figuratively—this Case File invites you to tell stories of comfort, tradition, and the heart of the home.

Case File No. 479 – June & Summer

If Case File 478 celebrates the warmth of the kitchen, Case File 479 steps outside into the bright, open air of summer. This Scene is all about sunshine, breezes, and the joy of long June days—colors that sparkle like blue skies, lemon ice, and sandy afternoons.

The palette blends laser lemon, sky blue, steel blue, white, and soft sand, evoking the lightness and energy of the season. Whether you’re documenting a favorite summer ritual, a moment of joy, or the feeling of stepping into the sun, this Case File encourages you to explore stories of brightness, freedom, and the simple magic of summer.

And remember—you’re never limited to the theme itself. Let the Scenes spark your imagination, or follow the traditional clues at the bottom of this post to guide your investigation. However you interpret the evidence, we can’t wait to see how you solve the Case!

INSPIRATION

Investigators, are you ready to crack the case? Let’s turn our magnifying glass to the second Case File on our June investigation board…

A Bright Summer Day

This Case File invites you to step into the glow of early summer — where lemon light spills across the sand, breezes stir the curtains, and everything feels fresh, open, and full of possibility. The Scene hums with warmth and freedom, painted in laser‑lemon yellows, sky blues, and soft whites that echo the brightness of June itself.

You’ll find traditional clues at the bottom of the reveal, but you’re also welcome to draw your own inspiration straight from the Scene. Maybe it’s the color palette that catches your eye, the popsicle‑stick shapes, the beach umbrellas, or the way sunlight filters through the day. Follow the clues wherever they lead — to stories of joy, refreshment, and the simple beauty of summer light.

GUEST DETECTIVES

Our Guest Detectives have stepped into the sunshine with us this month, each bringing their own creative spark to Case File No. 479. Their layouts glow with warmth, joy, and beautifully personal interpretations of the Scene — from sun‑washed color stories to breezy summer motifs that capture the feeling of a bright June day.

Let’s take a closer look at how each Guest Detective followed the clues. Their pages offer fresh perspectives on the Case File, blending creativity, storytelling, and that unmistakable CSI flair that’s sure to inspire your next investigation.

Heather Bellanger

I cracked Case #478! I leaned into the color palette, and from the evidence, I incorporated fussy-cut flowers and ribbon. The CSI cases always get me digging and creating layouts with lots of texture. Hope you found some inspiration today!

Jessica Navarro
With summer upon us, this case inspired me to scrap photos just recently taken at the Dallas Arboretum for their new Flutter By exhibit. We spent a wonderfully cool morning exploring the gardens and laughing at my daughter and hubby’s antics. I needed to get these photos documented and solve this case! My evidence: patterns of stripes; summer themed items – sun patterned paper; clouds; flowers; something with an ornate shape – the large detailed butterfly sticker; puffy stickers – the little butterflies; light bulb; frames on my photo of my daughter in yellow; beach-themed item – blue palm frond; jewels, sunbeams created with a stencil using distressed oxide ink; something round – little blue circle stickers near the color wheels; something with spokes – round color wheels fussy cut in different sizes; wood arrow; grid composition of my photos! My testimony was based on the inspiration word “Joy.” My journaling is based on the story of my daughter and hubby’s silly relationship and how much they “mess” with each other. Seeing them together and laughing is pure joy. I also used the complete color scheme, although my yellow is a bit darker than laser lemon. I did use sky blue, steel blue, white, and sand-drift. Solving this case filled my heart!

Margaret Crawford

The topic I selected was to document a summer memory (as my birthday is in December and it is summer in Australia then), and for writing format Joy slip - one line beginning "Today's bright spot..." and this I  tucked into the top of the photo on the right. On the reverse of this slip, I wrote: "What I would tell my 3-year-old self."

CSI  DETECTIVES

Our CSI Detectives have turned up the brightness for Case File No. 479, each one capturing the glow, joy, and breezy spirit of summer in their own creative way.
